Sadie Winkelstein

Sadie Winkelstein is a visual artist from the Bay Area. She holds a B.A. in Studio Arts, Psychology, and Art History from Oberlin College, and studied abroad at the Santa Reparata International School for the Arts in Florence, Italy. She has experience in administration, programming, and operations across arts and public health settings, and is skilled in museum and gallery education.

Currently, she is completing a year-long arts and research project funded by Oberlin's Robertson LGBTQ+ Arts Grant. Simultaneously, she is working as a creative design & operations coordinator for a private psychotherapy practice in the Bay Area. She will be relocating to New York in spring 2026 where she is seeking roles in Arts & Public Interest organizations.

My work explores the complexities of queerness, womanhood, and religion, focusing on the intersection of queer identities within Christian patriarchies. I work in figurative oil painting, taking inspiration from both the iconography of religious Italian Renaissance art (c. 13th-16th) and contemporary queer portraiture. I aim to both critique and celebrate how queerness intersects with sacred art and religious traditions.

I am primarily inspired by the artistic practice of my late grandmother, Barbara Winkelstein. I have sourced most of my materials from her collection, and hope to continue her legacy through my own work.
